Joyce Marian (Anderson) Havens, a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother, passed peacefully on December 11, 2019 at Carlton Village Assisted Living in Tucson. Joyce was 85 and is survived by her three daughters: Jennifer (Base) Horner, Deborah (Skip) Kriegel, and Catherine (Chris) Lake. She is also survived by grandchildren Bryce and Zoe Horner as well as Piper, Kirstin, and Tyler Lake.

Joyce was born in 1934 to Leroy and Marcella Anderson and grew up with her sister Doris in Riverside, Illinois. She completed her bachelor’s degree at Iowa State University and took a job as a stewardess (aka flight attendant) with United Airlines. On a flight from Los Angeles to New York City on New Year’s Day in 1958, she met Bill Havens, an Air Force pilot who happened to be a passenger on the flight. The couple corresponded by mail for ten months before meeting again in San Francisco. Four days later, they were engaged, and six weeks later, they were married! Joyce and Bill enjoyed 57 years together until Bill passed on in 2016. Now the soulmates are reunited.

A true Renaissance woman, Joyce jumped with both feet into every pursuit, including:

· Being an incredible mother and role model to her three girls and demonstrating to them how to grow into strong, independent women

· Living with her family in the San Francisco Bay area, Boston, Eugene, OR, Ann Arbor, MI, Melbourne, Australia, and Tucson (her home for 43 years)

· Traveling extensively throughout the United States and the world. Joyce even enjoyed a trip to Japan just a year before her passing!

· Owning a successful business, “The Colander,” a gourmet kitchenware store that sold Starbucks coffee beans long before their stores came to town

· Returning to university in her 40s while living in Australia and earning her Master’s Degree in Urban Planning, and then working as a city planner for the City of Tucson upon returning to the U.S.

· Volunteering for and serving as Executive Board President with the Pima County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program

· Retiring with Bill in Tucson, where they remodeled a house, continued to volunteer and travel the world, and enjoyed spending time together

For those so inclined, memorial donations may be made to the CASA Support Council for Pima County ( or a charity of your choice that benefits children, animals, or the environment, causes about which both Joyce and Bill were passionate. A Celebration of Joyce’s Life is planned for February. The family can be contacted via email at Joyce will forever remain in our hearts and memories, and we look forward with much joy to meeting her and our dad again on the other side.

How dear was Joyce to our Theta group and to me. I didn't really get to know Joyce at Iowa State where we lived in the Theta house. I was so intimidated by this accomplished, beautiful, talented girl that I didn't approach her often. As years passed and the Thetas continued their yearly round robin letters, we all became closer friends. In the 80s we began to have reunions every few years. Through the many years our Thetas gathered, Joyce became a dear and valued friend. I am so sad that I will not hear her wonderful stories and her joyful laughter again in this world. She was a warrior through every illness and a shining example of how to live a full, kind, committed life. Sherry Campbell Theta- Iowa State "56
