Arthur J. Adair, Founder, In Memoriam

Co-Founder of the Adair Funeral Homes in 1956 and President until his death on June 5, 1973, Arthur J. Adair established a living legacy of "Serving the Living With Faithful Service" that has carried the funeral home for 46 years. The vision and leadership of this wonderful man can best be seen by the longevity of the employees who were blessed to be able to work for him (several employees with over 30 years of service to the Adair Funeral Homes), and also the number of employees who worked for him who have gone on to manage or open funeral homes throughout the Southern United States.

After having actively participated in the opening and operation of the Adair Funeral Homes for 17 years, Martha Adair took over the leadership of the funeral home and staff in 1973 upon the death of her husband. She continued the growth of the funeral home from the original chapel to three chapels. In 1977 she was one of ten people to receive the first Jefferson Award from the American Institute for Public Service, and in 1980 was chosen Woman of the Year from the American Women's Association. She also started the "Assist" program for assisting widows and widowers to adjust to life after the loss of a spouse. While she has turned most of the day to day operation of the funeral homes over to her sons, she still remains active in determining the direction of the funeral homes programs and continues to work with families.
